Why 26.2 Miles for the Marathon?

The marathon distance was standardized at the 1908 London Olympics when the course was extended from 25 miles to 26 miles 385 yards so runners could finish in front of the royal box at the Olympic Stadium. This distance (42.195 km) became the official marathon distance in 1921.

Cycling Event Distances

Cycling events use both metric and imperial distances depending on the event type and location. Gran fondos typically use metric, while American events often use imperial distances.

Event Kilometers Miles Notes
Quarter Century 40.234 km 25 miles Beginner-friendly distance
Metric Half Century 50 km 31.069 miles Entry-level gran fondo
Half Century 80.467 km 50 miles Popular organized ride distance
Metric Century 100 km 62.137 miles Standard gran fondo distance
Century 160.934 km 100 miles Classic cycling achievement
Double Century 321.869 km 200 miles Endurance challenge

Professional Race Distances

Grand Tour stages vary from approximately 150-220 km (93-137 miles). Time trials range from 10 km prologues to 50+ km individual time trials. Classics like Paris-Roubaix cover approximately 260 km (161 miles).

Triathlon Distances

Triathlon offers standardized race formats from beginner-friendly sprints to the legendary Ironman distance. Understanding these distances helps athletes choose appropriate events for their fitness level.

Format Swim Bike Run Total
Super Sprint 400m / 0.25mi 10km / 6.2mi 2.5km / 1.6mi ~12.9km / 8mi
